Q3: How much does it cost to operate the koi pond with and without koi? UPDATE AS OF AUGUST 2016
A: The annual costs for the koi pond consist of $13,000 for supplies such as chemicals and fish food and $55,000 for staff to clean and maintain it. If we just had a pond, without koi, we would still have to maintain the pond—keep it clean and free of algae and debris. The estimated savings without koi would be about $2,000 in supplies and $15,000 for staff.
The koi pond is the central feature of our courtyard that is frequently and positively mentioned in guest comments. Often guests stop to watch the fish, or take pictures, and/or talk to Ely (the staff person who cleans the pond and takes care of the fish). Every day children show up to feed the fish at 8:30 in the morning—the only organized activity that we offer children.
We believe that the colorful koi are a valued amenity and are well worth the small extra costs.
